Podcast – Episode 2
Dom catches up with the pair to see how they are getting on with calving,
I can’t believe Christmas and new years has been and gone and we are now in 2025! We are
now making our way to the end of our second season here on our farm. What a ride it has been
so far!
Last time I wrote we were experiencing horrific long periods of rain. Every other day I was getting the motorbike stuck while getting the cows in, we were unable to plant any crops for the upcoming winter season, new grass from last years crop had only just been planted. Now we are experiencing the complete opposite. We have finally had summer arrive and what a summer it has been so far!
Busy times on farm have meant planting winter crop, new grasses back in the round and we are
currently refencing all of the new grass paddocks and Kip is flat out on the digger cultivating two new grass paddocks. We have ¾ of the silage we need for the upcoming winter all done. The cows are holding well on OAD and we are currently up on last seasons milk production which we are very happy with.
The amazing fine weather we have had has allowed us to get the kids out on the boat at the
lake – lots of swimming and biscuitng and some time away off the farm has been great.
I have managed to have a conversation with our lovely bank manager – just a general catch up
and see how things are going on farm. Sally and I from CMK caught up just before the Xmas
break and had a look at Figured. This has allowed me to have a live copy of our budget which
has helped us keep more of a close eye on our finances. Soon we will be catching up again with
CMK to come up with a plan for our next tax return. I am a little nervous about this tax return –
especially with a good payout year so it will be nice to have some clarity around what it could
potentially look like and have a rough plan in place.
Kip has ACL knee surgery coming up next month after a rugby injury at the end of last season.
So he is busy trying to get as much done on farm as he can before surgery. Wish me luck with
the patient 🤣
I am writing this blog on the plane as Kip and I come back from the Luke Combs concert in
Auckland! What a concert it was! Ready to hit the ground running this week back on farm.
Dom catches up with the pair to see how they are getting on with calving,
Another busy week of calving. We now have 103 cows in, out of 270 so
Oh man calving has hit us early, hard and fast 🥴. 60 cows/heifers in already
