It’s been a crazy few weeks on farm. We have just finished mating which was an exciting time for us this year. We are working with Wingman to breed for a OAD herd. We did 4 weeks of mating and now we are on OAD. The cows switched to OAD very well but I think the workers switched even better 🤪 our plan is to milk TAD until mating and then OAD for the rest of the season for a couple of seasons until our breeding comes through into the herd.
We have finally got all our winter crop paddocks back into new grass with some help from my cousin 🙌 and Kip has sprayed 2 new crop paddocks for Swedes. Silage is almost ready for the first cut. This weekend we are going away on a family trip to Hanmer with my cousins for a much needed break after the craziness of calving and mating! We finally feel as though we have
reached a good work/life balance.
It was nice to have another 60c pay rise in the milk payout. The wet spring we have had has put our finances under some strain with extra fertiliser, helicopter and buying in feed costs putting a damper on things which means we haven’t seen much benefit from the milk payout financially yet. Hopefully we can by the end of the season.
We had a fun live webinar with DWN, Figured and CMK a few weeks back. It’s always good value talking about the financial side of things and talking to different people about dairy farming. I think that’s where we learn the most. Kip and I are going to a OAD farm visit here on the West Coast this week. We are hoping to hear a few ideas and other farmers experiences with OAD farming. We are looking forward to this.
Can’t believe it’s nearly Christmas! 🎅 we have put up our Christmas tree 🌲 which the kids found exciting while mum furiously shops online for Xmas presents. I must admit I’m way more organised this year than any other year. It’s 3 weeks before Xmas instead of the week before 😂
