Addie’s Blog #12 – A busy few weeks!
A busy few weeks!
It’s been awhile since my last blog! Things on farm have been very busy. We are 10 days in to
AI. We are following a new mating plan with the help of Wingman to breed for a OAD herd which
is very exciting! It’s been exciting each day seeing what cows are on and selecting their bulls. I
can’t wait for calving next year 🙈
You probably would have seen but we just had another huge weather event with 200-300mls of
rain. ☔️ our cows have done surprisingly ok considering the horrendous wet conditions we have
had for 3 months now. We have some silage locked up finally which is a good start and one crop
paddock back into new grass. Have another new grass paddock to do and an oats paddock to
put in at the run off. But some more rain is coming so trying to get them ready so we can seed
after the next lot of rain.
We met with CMK a few weeks ago and then had a live webinar last week catching up with
CMK, Figured and DWN. It was a fun chat about farming and financials. Hopefully some of you
got to listen to it 😌 our budget has already been updated 3 times so far this season but it is a
working document so it’s great when we get to catch up with our accountants and discuss
what’s been happening on farm and then making changes.
We have also been talking to our bank manager (I’m actually yet to reply to her email 🙈) about
fixed and floating interest rates as our interest rates have been steadily dropping. We are going
to seek some advice on what we should be doing here as fixed and floating rates is totally new
to us and to be honest we have no idea what to do with these!
Our calves are all weaned and are on their second drench and the bulls are in with the heifers.
The end of the year is coming around so quick and it’s time to think about fitting in some Xmas
shopping around farm and cafe life. The cafe is starting to get busy but after the recent weather
event we are now dealing with a road closure which will impact our business unfortunately.
The kids are loving AI and helping out at the shed with the AI tech. We have had difficulties with
a relief milker not turning up which makes having a sleep in very hard and scarce. I guess it’s all
part of being a business owner. We will be going OAD after AI which I am looking forward to.
This will definitely take some pressure off the afternoons!
