Addie’s Blog #13 – Mating time!
It’s been a crazy few weeks on farm. We have just finished mating which was
3 weeks of constant rain ☔️. Paddocks are soaked and muddy. We have had our typical wet spring that we haven’t had for a few seasons. We have had to fly on fertiliser this past week and we have decided to give the cows some palm kernal and molasses to get them through this wet and cold weather. We want to ensure they don’t lose weight coming to mating. These things were not on our budget and I guess it’s been a good learning curve for us. You can plan the best you can with your season budget but there is always unexpected costs that come up. It will be interesting to see how the bank account is looking at the end of this month after the bills are paid.
I got to catch up with CMK accountants this week. Give an update on finances and the budget
to make a few tweaks here and there. It was actually a relief to talk to Sally and for her to be so
reassuring that unexpected costs especially due to weather are normal and that being open with
your accountant and bank manager is the best thing you can do in these situations. They are
there to support and offer advice in times like this.
The kids have been sick this past week and cabin fever is starting to set in 😒😅 praying for
some sunshine and a break in the rain. Other than the rain the cows are producing well and
grass does seem to be growing. Our calves are doing really well – all dehorned, and ready for
the older ones to move outside once this rain eases.
Looking forward to a day here and there of sun to be able to get some more jobs done and it
would be a luxury to go outside without the wet weather gear on!
